Safety improvements along St Andrews Avenue between Keith Road and 13th Street were complete in late 2024. This section of St Andrews is a local street that is well-used by pedestrians, a designated bike route and an important connection to the Green Necklace, Lions Gate Hospital, Ridgeway Elementary School and other area amenities.
The project was initiated to address excessive vehicle speeds on the street and provide a safer, more comfortable experience for those who travel along this corridor.
Key improvements include:
- Narrowing the vehicle travel lane to promote a greater sense of speed awareness
- Adding one speed hump per block to reduce driver speeds
- Adding a northbound parking protected mobility lane to increase safety for cyclists
- Intersection modifications to reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians, including two raised crosswalks and extended curbs
- Parking changes to improve visibility at intersections
- Constructing missing sidewalks on the east side of the street to improve walkability and pedestrian safety

The City completed a multi-phased engagement process to understand key concerns, how people experience the street, and gather input on possible changes, prior to construction. The engagement was designed to hear the diverse perspectives of those who live on, live near or travel along St Andrews. Visit our Let’s Talk page to learn more about the community engagement process.
This project supports key actions identified in the City’s Mobility Strategy and Council’s Strategic Plan by reducing travel speeds to improve neighbourhood safety and livability. The project also received financial support from TransLink’s Bicycle Infrastructure Capital Cost Share (BICCS) program.
