City Recognizes Heritage Conservation Through Heritage Awards

February 27, 2024

The City recognized two heritage conservation initiatives at the 2024 Heritage Awards, closing BC Heritage Week by celebrating the accomplishments of individuals, organizations, and businesses that have made a significant effort to support heritage conservation in the community.

The 2024 Heritage Awards recognized two conservation projects, one in the Residential Conservation category for The James Residence, and a second award in the Heritage Project Recognition category for St. Andrew’s United Church restoration work.

Residential Conservation – The James Residence, 532 East 10th Street. Built in 1907, the James Residence is associated with the early period of rapid growth during the Edwardian era. In 1924, it was moved next door where it came to be known as the “Copper Cottage” due to its exterior paint colour in the 1980’s – 2010’s. In 2020, to save it from demolition, the house was again relocated to its current location where it has been meticulously renovated and restored.

Heritage Project Recognition – St. Andrew’s United Church, 1140 Saint Georges Avenue. Designed in 1912 by architects Alexander & Brown, the church is valued as an excellent example of the Gothic Revival style. The interior of the church remains in substantially original condition with its cantilevered balcony, panelled wainscoting, lath and plaster walls, vaulted ceilings and brackets with trefoil cutouts. In 2022, extensive exterior restoration of wood elements was completed, including doors, shingles, bell tower louvres and window detailing.

The City’s Heritage Awards are presented bi-annually, and are an important part of the City’s Heritage Program, which helps promote public understanding and appreciation of heritage resources and their conservation. Learn more about the Heritage Awards and see past award recipients at cnv.org/HeritageAwards
