The City's goal is to ensure sustainable management of parks that will contribute to the ecological, social, and economic well-being of the community. This goal supports Council's strategic plan priority to be a leader in climate action by acting as stewards of the environment for future generations.
To help achieve this goal, a forest management plan was created for Greenwood and Kealy Woods Park. This plan is tailored to the unique features found in these forests and is based on environmental assessment reports, community feedback, and consideration of the larger community's recreational needs.
Plan includes:
- Renovating sections of trail
- Removing invasive plants
- Restoring areas with native plants
- Improving park drainage
- Undertaking wild fire protection measures
- Stewardship activities with schools and community members
Completed Work
- City Park Stewards invasive plant removal
- Construction of a multiuse trail looped trail in the eastern portion of Greenwood.Included native planting and invasive removal. Project in partnership with the North Shore Mountain Bike Association (NSMBA).
- Renovation and partial re-routing of the main park trail. Included removal of stairs, native planting and invasive plant removal.
- Select removal of failing trees and creating wildlife snags (ongoing).
- Closure of disc golf course and unsanctioned trails (ongoing).
About the Parks
Greenwood and Kealy Woods are large natural urban forest parks located in the upper Grand Boulevard neighborhood. Both park areas contain a network of formal and informal trails used by walkers, runners, and mountain bikers. There is an old quarry in Greenwood Park with steep bluffs. Kealy Woods consist of a bedrock outcrop with a series of surrounding bluffs. A watercourse complex exists in the northeastern edge of Greenwood carrying runoff from the Highway #1 and drainage from Tempe Heights Park. There is also a small watercourse that drains southeast of the main quarry in Greenwood.
