Cool It! Climate Leadership Program

The Cool It! Climate Leadership Program is a partnership between the City and the BC Sustainable Energy Association (BCSEA) to deliver educational workshops for grades five and six students in all City schools.

BCSEA is a non-profit association committed to promoting the understanding, development and adoption of sustainable energy and energy conservation and efficiency in British Columbia.

If your school would like to participate in the next Cool It! Challenge, please contact the BCSEA at cool-it@bcsea.org. School sign-up usually occurs during the Fall with the Challenge taking place the following Spring.

2022 Recipients

Ms. Eldon's Grade 5 Class - Queen Mary Community Elementary School

The top prize for class-wide reductions went to Ms. Eldon's Grade 5 Class at Queen Mary Community Elementary School. Ms. Eldon's class reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by 6.5 tonnes!


The Cool It! program did not run in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID.


2019 Recipients

Ms. Cynthia Whyte’s Grade 3/4 class - Larson Elementary

The top prize for class-wide reductions went to Ms. Cynthia Whyte’s Grade 3/4 class at Larson Elementary. Ms. Whyte’s class reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by 22 tonnes!


2018 Recipients

Mr. Andy Hone’s Grade 4/5 class - Ridgeway Elementary

The top prize for class-wide reductions went to Mr. Andy Hone’s Grade 4/5 class at Ridgeway Elementary School. Mr. Hone’s class reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by 22 tonnes!

Ms. Nancy Dale’s Grade 4/5 class - Boundary Elementary

The top prize for class-wide reductions went to Ms. Nancy Dale’s Grade 4/5 class at Boundary Elementary School. Ms. Dale’s class reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by 21 tonnes!

Mr. Scott Gale's Grade 5 class - Ridgeway Elementary School

The top prize for class-wide reductions went again to Mr. Scott Gale's Grade 5 class at Ridgeway Elementary School. Mr. Gale’s class reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by 31 tonnes!

The top prize for class-wide reductions went to Mr. Scott Gale's Grade 5 class at Ridgeway Elementary School. Mr. Gale’s class reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by 28 tonnes!


2014 Recipients

Ms. Trenzek's Grade 6 class - Larson Elementary School

The top prize for class-wide reductions went to Ms. Trenzek's Grade 6 class at Larson Elementary School. Ms. Trenzek's class reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by 34 tonnes (approximately 1.6 tonnes per student).

Mr. Scott Sears' Grade 6 class - Queen Mary Elementary

The top prize for class-wide reductions went to Mr. Scott Sears' Grade 6 class at Queen Mary Elementary School. Mr. Sears' class reduced their greenhouse gas emissions by 22 tonnes.


2011 Recipients

Ms. Erika Grossi's Grade 5 class - St. Edmunds Elementary

For the second year in a row, the top prize for class-wide reductions went to Ms. Erika Grossi's Grade 5 class at St. Edmunds Elementary. The class achieved 42 tonnes of reductions, approximately 1.9 tonnes per student.

Glen Summersgill - Queen Mary Elementary

The award for top student in the City went to Glen Summersgill from Queen Mary Elementary. Glen reduced his emissions by 3.34 tonnes. Congratulations, Glen!


2010 Recipients

Ms. Erika Grossi's Grade 5 class - St. Edmunds Elementary

The top prize for class-wide reductions went to Ms. Erika Grossi's Grade 5 class at St. Edmunds Elementary (50 tonnes of reductions, approximately 1.8 tonnes per student).

Ralie Nikolova - Queen Mary Elementary

The top prize for individual reductions was achieved by Ralie Nikolova from Queen Mary Elementary, who reduced her emissions by 3.3 tonnes - the equivalent of taking the family car off the road for several months.


2009 Recipients

Mr. Scott Gale's Grade 5/6 class - Queen Mary Elementary

Mr. Scott Gale's class achieved the most greenhouse gas emission reductions during the 2009 challenge, resulting in 31 tonnes of reductions (approximately one tonne per student).

Victoria Poehls - Queensbury Elementary

The top prize for individual reductions went to Victoria Poehls, who reduced her emissions by 2.35 tonnes.
