City Celebrating Rivers Day with Community Event

September 18, 2024

The City of North Vancouver is celebrating Rivers Day with a free community event featuring fun activities for all ages. The event will include music, games, community booths and an invasive plant pull and takes place Sunday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Mosquito Creek Park (Fell Avenue and West 17th Street).

World Rivers Day was established in 2005 and is celebrated globally every September to increase public awareness and encourage the improved stewardship of waterways. Rivers Day has been celebrated by the City, together with the City Park Stewards program, over many years.

This year’s free event will include:

  • Children’s activities and music;
  • An invasive plant pull for registered volunteers;
  • A free bike repair café;
  • Mason bee house decorating;
  • Hands-on ivy weaving demonstrations; and
  • Interactive community booths including the North Shore Streamkeepers, Recycle BC, City of North Vancouver Fire Department, Lonsdale Energy Corporation, Metro Vancouver Nutrifor and more.

During the event, City Park Stewards volunteers will be undertaking ecosystem restoration activities in the park, including removing invasive plants. Anyone interested in volunteering is welcome to register to participate. No experience is necessary and training and tools will be provided. Please register to volunteer in advance at cnv.org/CityParkStewards

About the Bike Repair Café

The free bike repair café will feature one-on-one hands-on maintenance sessions led by experienced mechanics from the PEDAL Society. Mechanics will provide tune-ups, and diagnostics, answer questions and provide repair advice. One-on-one sessions are first come, first served, and please only one bike per session per person. E-bikes are accepted, however, mechanics will only look at mechanical components.
