Tips and Tricks for a Safe and Fun Halloween in the City

October 09, 2024
As Halloween nears, the City of North Vancouver is sharing some tips and tricks with the community to make sure October 31 is safe and spooktacular for everyone.

No Fireworks

The City, the District of West Vancouver, and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation) bans the sale, purchase, possession, or discharge of fireworks of any kind unless it's a public display by a certified Fireworks Supervisor. Anyone in violation of the ban could face a fine up to $500, or up to $10,000 if convicted. Visit cnv.org/FireSafety to find the regulation bylaws.

Fire Safety

  • Caution with candles: Don’t leave candles unattended and consider using battery-operated candles in Jack-o-lanterns. Place lit pumpkins well away from flammable items, and place decorations away from heat sources.
  • Smoke alarms save lives: Make sure you have working smoke alarms in your home, and that everyone knows how to evacuate in case of a fire.

Road Safety

  • Slow down and stay focused: leave your phone alone and be alert in residential neighborhoods as pedestrians may move in unpredictable ways. If you can, steer clear of driving between 5:30 and 9 p.m., when trick-or-treating is in full swing.
  • Teach road safety: Parents, take a moment to chat with your kids about crossing streets safely. Remind them how to be visible to drivers, especially in the dark or rainy weather.
  • Light up the night: Trick-or-treaters, don’t forget your flashlights or glow sticks you can stay visible! Stay in well-lit areas and only visit homes that have their outside lights on.

Have a safe and fun Halloween!

Firefighters and Parks staff will be out in the community on Halloween night to make sure everyone can enjoy a safe evening. Look for more trick-or-treating safety tips on our website at cnv.org/Halloween.
