City Statement on Residential Schools

August 12, 2021
The City of North Vancouver is fully supporting the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), the xʷməθkʷəy̓ əm (Musqueam Nation), the səl̓ilw̓ ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation) and other affected nations in their efforts to honour, retrieve and remember their deceased children. We will provide whatever support they need through this difficult time and work collaboratively with them to build a more just and equitable future.

We acknowledge the injustices, deep-rooted grief, trauma and loss caused by Canada’s residential schools and other colonial systems and policies that were enacted and supported by all levels of government, including the City of North Vancouver, and the lasting impact of colonialism in our communities today. We need to correct these wrongs and will continue to work with the First Nations to ensure that as we walk the path reconciliation together, the City’s actions will be supportive, appropriate and appreciated.

We commit to working toward dismantling systemic racism within our organization and community, and to supporting the healing of those affected by residential schools.

We are committed to upholding the Calls to Action identified by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, including informing our residents and staff about the truth of what happened in residential schools and addressing the consequences of colonial policies which have had lasting effects on all Indigenous peoples.

The Indian Residential School Survivors Society Emergency Crisis Line is available 24/7 for those who may need counselling or support. Call 1-800-721-0066, or the 24-hr crisis line at 1-866-925-4419.
