Select Trails Remain Closed in the City of North Vancouver Following Storm Event

October 25, 2024

Following last weekend’s atmospheric river event, the City is reminding residents to comply with posted signage and barricades on trail sections that remain closed to the public. These closures are crucial for public safety and to protect sensitive streamside environments given the damage following the significant and prolonged storm. City Crews continue to work quickly to restore full trail access.

Impacted Trails

We urge the public to respect trail closures and refrain from entering these areas for their safety:

  • Heywood Park, Ravine Greenway (west side): Several sections of the trail have been severely washed out, and damage to the elevated boardwalk is still being assessed. Due to the extent of the damage and challenging access for restoration, we expect this section of the trail to remain closed for an extended period.

  • Mahon Park (various sections): Several sections of the trail have sustained significant damage due to stream bank erosion. Given the extent of the damage and the challenging access for restoration, we anticipate that this area will remain closed for an extended period.

The City is working to restore access as quickly as possible—we understand that the atmospheric storm has considerably impacted North Shore residents, and we thank you for your cooperation and understanding during this time.

Storm Impact Overview

The recent storm resulted in high-velocity water traveling through stream corridors, leading to significant damage, including washed-out pathways, eroded stream banks, and slope stabilization issues.

While City staff are undertaking trail repairs and restorations, some of the more severely impacted areas require specialized support, including design and engineering solutions due to the extent of the damage and difficulties gaining access. The City remains committed to ensuring effective restoration and enhancing resiliency against future storm events and the impacts of climate change.
