City Planting Street Trees to Expand Urban Forest

November 12, 2024

As part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing the urban forest, the City of North Vancouver will be planting approximately 100 new street trees in public boulevards throughout the community this fall through the annual Living City Street Tree Planting Program.

For over a decade, this program has contributed to the health and vitality of our community’s urban landscape. By planting new street trees, we not only beautify our neighborhoods but also provide important environmental benefits, including improved air quality, reduced urban heat and enhanced biodiversity. These trees are living assets that promote a sustainable and resilient community.

What to Expect

Planting will begin in early November and is expected to be complete by February 2025. Each new tree location will be marked with on-site signage. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Engineering, Parks & Environment by emailing livingcitytrees@cnv.org or calling 604-987-7155.

Site and Species Selection

Each year, we carefully assess areas of the community for new locations that currently lack street trees and have the necessary planting conditions to help ensure new trees can thrive, such as enough space and soil volume. These locations are then prioritized based on the benefit to the broader community.

Once planting locations are determined, we prepare tailored planting plans and select tree species that align with the unique character and context of each neighborhood. We also consider local environmental factors and the expected impacts of climate change. This careful planning helps support the long-term health and sustainability of our community’s urban forest.

Protecting and Expanding the Urban Forest

The City manages over 9,800 trees in parks and boulevards throughout the community, as well as countless trees in forested areas. More than half (65 per cent) of the City’s tree canopy is on publicly managed land, with 38 per cent located in parks, 25 per cent in streets and rights-of-way, and another 2 per cent on other City land.

To ensure the health and growth of our urban forest over the next 30 years, the City is developing an Urban Forest Plan. Learn more at cnv.org/UrbanForest.
